Restoration of the Bell of the Civic Tower

The heavy bronze bell had collapsed to the ground in the tragedy of 1989, in which the Civic Tower of Pavia crumbled without warning, killing 4 persons who were passing by.

He was by then kept in the basement of the Visconti Castle, in a warehouse in a state of neglect. In the spring of 2014, the city administration has entrusted to REA a project of recovery and restoration of bronze artefact, which dates back to the sixteenth century. The goal of the admonistration was to put the old bell in the courtyard of the Broletto, by the apse of the Renaissance bell tower of the Cathedral.

REA therefore carried out a on-site surveys and organized transport operations, who were particulary complex first of all because of its 1200 kilograms weight, made fragile by the collapse of the tower.

At the end it was decided to make a soft restoration work, consisting in cleaning of the decorations from all deposits. No one wanted to restore in full the artefact, but keep the signs of the violence suffered by the bell in the tower's collapse, in memory of that terrible day.
